A TR19 certificate shows your kitchen extract was cleaned to TR19 Grease, the standard from BESA, the building services trade body. It comes with a report of what was cleaned, with photos and grease readings. Insurers and fire officers may ask to see it, so keep every one on file.
What the report and certificate should show
After a clean to TR19 Grease, you should get a post-clean report. BESA says it should include:

If a part couldn't be reached, the report should say so and suggest a fix, such as fitting an extra access panel. (BESA, AXA)
A cleaning firm's certificate or a BESCA certificate?
There are two kinds you'll see:
- The cleaning firm's own certificate. Given by the firm that did the clean.
- A BESCA certificate. Firms in BESCA's Vent Hygiene Elite scheme log each clean on the BESCA portal, and it makes the certificate. (BESA)
Some insurers prefer a firm on the BESCA Vent Hygiene Register. AXA suggests one. (AXA) Check your policy to see what yours asks for.
Who asks to see it
- Your insurer. Many insurers now ask for proof that the ductwork is cleaned regularly. (BESA) If the cleaning lapses, your cover could be invalid. (AXA)
- The fire authority. Your extract system must be in your fire risk assessment. (Kent Fire and Rescue)

- Put the date of the next clean in the diary.
